Review: Aflame (Fall Away #4) by Penelope Douglas

Title: Aflame
Author: Penelope Douglas
Series: Fall Away #4

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Goodreads | Amazon | B&N | BookDepo
The tables have turned. Now I have the power—and it’s his turn to beg…
Everyone wants to be me.
Maybe it’s the sway of my skirt or the way I flip my hair, but I don’t care. Even though their attention is the last thing I crave, I just can’t stop. I dominate the track, the speed rattles my bones, and the wind and the crowd screams my name.
I’m her. The girl driver. The queen of the race. And I’m surviving—something he thought I’d never do.
They all still talk about him. Did you see Jared Trent on T.V? What did you think of his last race, Tate? When is he coming back to town, Tate?
But I refuse to care too much. Because when Jared does come home, I won’t be here.
Tatum Brandt is gone. I’m someone new.
“Everything else may change, but never the way I love you.”
Beware Spoilers Ahead!

I usually (always) love happily ever afters but when a HEA is too HEA it ruins the whole book. For me Aflame was one of those “too HEA” books.

In the previous book, falling away, Jared and Tate were having some issues with their relationship and their lives. They know each other since they were children, they loved each other since they could understand what love is and now they have their whole lives ahead of them to share their love. Somewhere along the way though, Jared lost himself. Does that mean that he doesn’t love Tate anymore? Answer: NO.

Jared wanted some time off their relationship where he could find himself, make some choices for his future so he could be the man Tate deserves. Is that too much to ask?

So Jared takes some time off of their relationship while he sorts himself out. Tate being Tate believes that the world revolves around her and as always takes it personally. I was so surprised to see that not even six months had passed since they broke up and Tate has already moved on! I was furious.

I rarely, almost never, blame heroines. Let’s face it, most of the time it’s the hero’s fault when something goes wrong, but I didn’t like Tate very much. They claim to have loved each other since they were children but yet when Jared needs some time for himself, Tate goes with the first man that stands in front of her. Where did the love go? Just because they had a break does that mean that their love is gone? I can’t understand it!

I didn’t really like this new Tate. Everyone believes that she’s a new confident Tate but believe me when I say that I have seen confident heroines and Tate isn’t one of them. She was just angry. If confidence means making the worst mistakes of your life then yeah, Tate was indeed confident. Is this the real Tate? I hope not. I loved the Tate we got to see in the three previous books and that’s the picture I’m going to keep about her.

Anyway, Jared was A-M-A-Z-I—N-G. He was confidentbecause he had time to concentrate on his future ad shape it like he wanted to and I really liked that. I also loved seeing Madoc and Fallon and Jax and Juliet. I even liked the huge surprise we got from the latter couple.

Aflame was the grand finale for all of them. Every couple has their HEA. I’m going to miss all of these crazy characters, even the new Tate. Mistakes and all, she is the woman Jared loves. The epilogue was too much for me but I know that people love this kind of things so I’m going to leave it be.

Despite everything, I strongly recommend this book. This is the last book we will be getting for the whole gang and you mustn’t miss it.

I hope you enjoy it!

STACKING THE SHELVES #43

Posted on Saturday, June 27, 2015 1:07 PM

Stacking the Shelves is a weekly meme hosted by Tynga's Reviews. It gives us a chance to share with readers what we bought, borrowed, swapped, won or got for review each week.

This week I read:

Books I loved:

Click on cover for Goodreads link:

First of all, I'd like to say I'm sorry! These past few weeks I haven't replied to any comment on my blog and I'm really sorry!!!

This week I finished The Dark Protectors series by Rebecca Zanetti and begun reading (for the first time) the Harry Potter series. I managed to read the first 4 books and I really loved them. So far I haven't noticed major differences between the books and the movies but I can't wait to read the Deathly Hallows. Since there were two movies for this book I'm really curious to see if they have changed anything.

I also got to read Sweet, the 3rd book in the Contours of the Heart series. I had this book in my tbr pile for quite some time and once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down.

What did you read this week???

Review: A Sorceress of His Own (The Gifted Ones #1) by Dianne Duvall

Title: A Sorceress of His Own
Author: Dianne Duvall
Series: The Gifted Ones #1

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Goodreads | Amazon | B&N | BookDepo
Since the day Lord Dillon earned his spurs, rumors of his savagery on the battlefield have preceded him into every room, stilling tongues and sparking fear. Weary of battle, he wishes only to find a woman he can wed who will approach him not with fear, but with the tenderness that has been absent from his life for so long. Yet only the wisewoman seems invariably at ease in his presence. Perhaps because she garners the same fear in others that he does himself.
For seven years, Alyssa has been by Lord Dillon's side, counseling him from the shadows, healing him with her hands, and staving off the worst of his loneliness while his fearsome reputation keeps others at bay. Blessed--or cursed--with gifts that label her a sorceress, she is forced to conceal her youth and the love she harbors for him beneath umbral robes that lead Dillon and his people to believe she is the same aged wisewoman who served his father.
All is revealed, however, and passions flare when an enemy threatens Dillon's life and Alyssa sacrifices everything to save him. When Dillon discovers that the wisewoman is far from elderly, he is instantly entranced. And, as he and Alyssa work together to defeat an enemy bent on destroying them both, Dillon will risk anything--even the wrath of his king--to be with her.
This is the first mind blowing book in what is bound to become an incredible series. The gifted ones book #1 tells the story of Lord Dillon, Earl of Westcott and one of the very first gifted ones, Alyssa.

For years Dillon has conquered, won and gained lands, battles and gold but the only thing he seems unable to find is what his heart most desires, a wife. Dillon is considered a savage man and thus feared by many. Never interested to correct the rumors surrounding him, Dillon has gained many enemies and allies alike. But thus he has lost what he desires: a wife who will take him without fear, who will care for him with the same tenderness that he does, who will stand by his side as a companion, a partner, a mate.

The only person who seems to tolerate him and treat him with no fear is the old wise woman. A woman who is constantly counseling him, offering her wisdom without asking anything in return. A woman who has stood by Dillon’s side through the loneliness, the anger, the time. No one knows what is hiding behind the cowl concealing her face.

Alyssa was such a perfect character. I connected with her from the very beginning. Dillon is so focused around his own loneliness that he has no idea he is the only person Alyssa interacts with. Everyone fears the witch behind the hood but no one has seen her face. Until her loyalty to Dillon almost kills her. Dillon is shocked to discover the face of a young woman behind the cowl but he is more determined than ever to save her.

I have no words. I’m in love with this book. I already read it twice and I can’t get it out of my mind. It’s mind blowing. The gifted ones series is a spin-off from the Immortal guardians series but it is nothing like it. It’s so different. It’s basically a historical paranormal romance with two incredibly amazing main characters and more loveable secondary ones. There are many mysteries and twists around the story that will definitely captivate you. Once Dillon uncovers Alyssa’s secrets we have an off the charts hot, steamy romance but there are also many obstacles and danger lurking around.

I could talk forever about these two main characters but I’m not. Just READ it. I promise you will not regret it.

I also loved Robert, Dillon’s brother. I know he is the next character that will get his story and I can’t wait. Of course since this is a series about the first gifted ones, Seth couldn’t be missing along with Marcus and Roland. I’ve said this a lot and I’m going to say it again: we need Seth’s story ASAP!

Intrigue, action, suspense, gifted ones, danger and a hot alpha male a sorceress of his own has it all.

Highly recommended!

Dream of You - cover
Abby Erickson isn't looking for a one-night stand, a relationship, or anything that involves any one-on-one time, but when she witnesses a shocking crime, she's thrust into the hands of the sexiest man she's ever seen - Colton Anders. His job is to protect her, but with every look, every touch, and every simmering kiss, she's in danger of not only losing her life but her heart also.

EXCERPT

Detective Hart asked a few more questions. Did I notice if they had gotten in a car? No. Was a name even spoken? Not that I recalled. Did they say anything to the man they shot? I wasn’t sure. Eventually, he got up and left the room to retrieve some photos they wanted me to look at.

I was alone with Colton.

Any other time I probably would’ve been beside myself with nervousness, but at this point, I barely registered his presence. All I wanted to do was go home and forget this night.

“Abby?”

My gaze slowly lifted at the sound of my name. His voice was deep and gruff—a morning voice.

He leaned toward me, placing his arms on the table. Short dark hairs dusted powerful forearms. The few times I’d seen him over the years, I hadn’t been in close proximity to him, but now I could see the tiny differences between the Colton I’d admired from afar in high school and the one sitting in front of me, some ten years later. Fine lines had formed around the corners of his eyes. His jaw seemed harder, and the five-o’clock shadow was something new.

Something sexy.

I really needed to stop thinking in general.

“Are you sure you’re okay, Abby?” he asked, and real concern filled his voice.

I shook my head slowly as a shiver raced down my spine. “Yes. No? I’m sorry. I’m so tired.”

“I can imagine.” He glanced at the door as he moved his shoulders, as if working out a kink. “We’ll get you home soon.”

Slouching in the metal chair, I sighed. “Is this…the start of your shift or…?”

Colton’s cobalt gaze tracked back to me. “I usually get off around eight, but we work in cycles for homicide calls. It was our weekend.”

“Sorry,” I whispered, and then frowned. “I don’t even know why I apologized. It’s got to be hard working those kinds of hours, having to be on call.”

“I imagine it is for some, especially those with a family.” One side of his lips quirked up, and despite the dire situation, my stomach dipped a bit. He lifted his left hand. “Obviously, I’m not married. I wouldn’t know.”

ARC Review: Wicked Ride (Realm Enforcers #1) by Rebecca Zanetti

Posted on Monday, June 22, 2015 12:51 PM

Title: Wicked Ride
Author: Rebecca Zanetti
Series: Realm Enforcers #1

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Goodreads | Amazon | B&N | BookDepo
If you love the Dark Protectors, these wicked hot Realm Enforcers are for you!
Alexandra Monzelle is a hard-fighting, heat-packing Seattle vice cop, and she’s not much interested in being protected. Her short skirt and sex-kitten heels are tools to lure her suspects into talking about the deadly new drug hitting the streets. She can take care of herself and then some. Unfortunately, she can’t seem to get that through to Kellach Dunne.
Kellach is a fresh import from Dublin, and he’s landed at the heart of a vicious motorcycle club that deals in guns, narcotics, and mayhem. He’s all male, all rough power—and all interference in her damn investigation. Maybe he’s one of the good guys. Maybe not. Lex knows an affair with an immortal like him would risk everything. No matter how delicious he looks…
“I’ve lived lifetimes, Alexandra, and I don’t think I’ve ever wanted a woman this much”
Wicked ride is the first book in Rebecca Zanetti’s new series Realm Enforcers. This is basically a spin off from Dark Protectors series. Before reading wicked ride I hadn’t even read the first book of the Dark protectors series. Now, I’m on Hunted, the third book.

Alexandra Monzell is a sexy, serious badass Seattle cop who is perfectly capable of looking after herself. Enter Kellach Dunne. Travelling all the way from Ireland to Seattle, Kellach is on a mission. A new drug is on the streets of Seattle and it’s lethal. Alex thinks that Kellach is involved in the distribution of Apollo, the drug as he has joined the local motorcycle club known for its illegal activity. The cops want the drug off the streets and Alex will do anything to discover the truth.

I had no idea this was a paranormal book. I really really liked that. Kellach was so damn hot, arrogant and strong. He is a witch, which was really funny because there is a scene where Alex finds out what he is and she can’t believe it because she thinks that witches are only females. Kellach was real fun to have around. I loved him but there were times that he was very over protective and Alex didn’t like that at all.

Alex was such a strong heroine. She would do anything for her mother and sister and she did. She was taking care of her mother and thus denied herself the comforts she could have. Truth be told she was a bi tiring at times with her “issues” but it was easy to overlook.

What I also loved were the secondary characters. I loved Kellach’s brothers so much and especially Daire and Adam, there was another witch, Simone who was very powerful and of course the mysterious Nicholaj Veis. Simone and Nic had a thing in the past but something happened and they are no longer an item. I really want to read their story. The tension between them was exploding! Victoria, Alex’s sister was an incredible and funny character as well.

I have no idea who is next but I really can’t wait to see. In Wicked Ride we also get to read an excerpt of Zanetti’s new post-apocalyptic book called the Scorpius Syndrome. If the book is anything like the expert we got then it’s going to be AMAZING. I’m really excited!

Fast paced, full of action, suspense, humor, a hot sexy hero and an independent heroine, lots of sexy witches and other paranormals, you can’t not read Wicked Ride.

Highly recommended!

Stacking the Shelves is a weekly meme hosted by Tynga's Reviews. It gives us a chance to share with readers what we bought, borrowed, swapped, won or got for review each week.

This week I read:

Books I loved:

Click on cover for Goodreads link:

I can't believe that the Angelfall series has ended! I love Raffe & Penryn so much! I wish there are more books to come although I know that's not going to happen.

I have finally read the last two books in the Sea Breeze series and I really loved them! All of the couples were amazing. The last book was very special as we got to see them all and their futures look very bright.

I got an ARC of Wicked Ride, Zanetti's new series. I have actually only read her Sin Brothers series (which I LOVE) and since I really liked Wicked Ride, I decided to begin the series that is based on, Dark protectors. The series is a bit slow in the beginning but it does pick up the pace halfway through. I'm actually almost finished with the series, I'm currently reading the 6th book. I won't link all the books since there are quite a few but you can surely check it out on Goodreads.

What did you read this week???

Review: Suddenly One Summer by Julie James

Title: Suddenly One Summer
Author: Julie James
Series: None (spin off FBI/US Attorney series )

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Goodreads | Amazon | B&N | BookDepo
Divorce lawyer Victoria Slade has seen enough unhappy endings to swear off marriage forever. That doesn't mean she's opposed to casual dating—just not with her cocky new neighbor, who is as gorgeous and tempting as he is off-limits. But once she agrees to take on his sister's case, she's as determined to win as ever—even if that means teaming up with Ford…
Investigative journalist Ford Dixon is bent on finding the man who got his sister pregnant and left her high and dry. He's willing to partner with Victoria, despite the fact that the beautiful brunette gets under his skin like no other woman. He might not be looking to settle down, but there's no denying the scorching attraction between them. Still, the more time he spends with Victoria, the more he realizes that the one woman as skeptical about love as he is might be the only woman he could really fall for…
Victoria Slade is a successful lawyer, leads the perfect life and above all she’s young. When her house is broken in and she suffers a terrible panic attack, Victoria decides it’s time to move. Victoria has been living for a while in her new apartment but she still hasn’t met her new neighbor until fate brings them together.

As an investigating journalist, it’s Ford’s job to know the people who live in his building until he meets his judgy little new neighbor. So when his sister, Nicole, asks Victoria to help her find her baby daddy, Ford has to help. They might not like each other much but they will work together to find the man who got Nicole pregnant.

I love reading books by Julie James. Suddenly one summer was an amazing realistic book with two incredible realistic characters. Everything about this book felt read. Both hero and heroine were smart, witty, dealing with their own problems. I loved how their romance built up step by step and it wasn’t rushed. Ford and Victoria spent a lot of time together investigating, bonding and finally falling for each other.

Victoria and Ford have a lot of issues to deal with, especially Victoria so when I read the end I was very surprised. I guess when you want something so much, you fight for it.

This book can definitely be read as a standalone since it doesn’t really belong to the FBI/ US Attorney series though Ford is Brook’s (Love Irresistibly) best friend. I loved that we got to see more of Brook and Cade. There were a couple of scenes with Ford and Brook that makes you realize how important friendship is and I loved that too.

Suddenly one summer was a marvelous read. Victoria and Ford were two amazing characters and so were Nicole and Zoe, the baby. I hope we get to see what happens with Nicole because I really liked her.

Since this is a Julie James book, I abso-f*cking-lutely recommend it!

Review: Shards of Hope (Psy-Changeling #14) by Nalini Singh

Title: Shards of Hope
Author: Nalini Singh
Series: Psy-Changeling #14

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Goodreads | Amazon | B&N | BookDepo
Awakening wounded in a darkened cell, their psychic abilities blocked, Aden and Zaira know they must escape. But when the lethal soldiers break free from their mysterious prison, they find themselves in a harsh, inhospitable landscape far from civilization. Their only hope for survival is to make it to the hidden home of a predatory changeling pack that doesn’t welcome outsiders.
And they must survive. A shadowy enemy has put a target on the back of the Arrow squad, an enemy that cannot be permitted to succeed in its deadly campaign. Aden will cross any line to keep his people safe for this new future, where even an assassin might have hope of a life beyond blood and death and pain. Zaira has no such hope. She knows she’s too damaged to return from the abyss. Her driving goal is to protect Aden, protect the only person who has ever come back for her no matter what.
This time, even Aden’s passionate determination may not be enough—because the emotionless chill of Silence existed for a reason. For the violent, and the insane, and the irreparably broken…like Zaira.
“If I take you. I’ll keep you. Always.”
This is the second book in the series with two Psy main characters. The first one was Heart of Obsidian, Kaleb and Sahara’s story.

Truth be told I loved Sahara and Kaleb’s story even though they were both psy too but in Aden and Zaira’s story something was off. I can’t say I loved the book or the main characters but I did enjoy it.

Aden, leader of the Arrows, is not the person one simply messes with. Nobody really knows the capacity of his abilities but no one seems to care to ask. Zaira is a threat of her own, Aden’s right hand. When they both wake up in a strange place, blocked from the net, unable to use their abilities and having to deal with a shot wound, they both realize that they will have to escape or they are dead.

Escaping won’t be easy. With nowhere to run or to hide they will have to rely on a not so welcoming pack in order to survive.

I wish this was all that happened in the book. If it were I’d have loved it. Needless to say it wasn’t. Most of the book was covered by politics and the fall of silence. These two topics were a huge part of the book while the romance took only about 5% of the book and I’m not kidding. As if the lack of romance wasn’t enough, we had to deal with Zaira’s constant worry about becoming the monster of her past. I was really sorry about her childhood but how many times is it going to be mentioned before it becomes annoying?!

So yeah, I had some major issues with the book BUT in the end of the day, it all comes down to being Aden’s story and since I love Aden, I couldn’t not love his story.

Shards of hope wasn’t a perfect book, I didn’t love it but I enjoyed reading it. It was a nice addition to the series, I had a lot of fun catching up with some characters we’ve previously met. I especially loved seeing Sienna. I need more Sienna and Hawke scenes!

All in all, it was a nice read, it could be better but I’m just glad that we got Aden’s story. I don’t really like Zaira, maybe if we see her in the next books I’ll get used to her but right now, in this book, she wasn’t a great heroine. Still, this is an installment you can’t miss in the series. Just because I didn’t like Zaira that doesn’t mean anything, you may love her.

I totally recommend it and I can’t but wonder who is next. I’m really hoping to see a changeling/changeling or a psy/changeling couple.
